There is something to be said for that quality time with family. As our children, grandchildren, and their friends visit us at Duck Woods this summer, those memories that will last a lifetime. Teaching golf to our youth is so important but making sure the game is taught in the correct nature is essential. One of the best ways to introduce golf to your favorite youngster under the age of 7, is very simple: let them explore golf. Exploring golf can be raking the sand trap, filling in divots, cleaning clubs and golf balls, and going for a ride on the golf cart.

When golf was introduced to our son, Jayce, that is exactly how I approached this incredible game. In many instances, I would play 9-holes and he would ride along. Jayce was more into filling in divots and raking bunkers than hitting a golf ball (a superintendent’s best friend). Now that Jayce is 9, the golf bug is in full bloom and all he wants to do is practice and get better.

For our daughter, Kenzie (3), she is just beginning to learn and washing golf balls is her favorite activity at the course, besides eating French fries!

Enjoy your time with you children and grandchildren!

Sincerely,
Aaron Palen, PGA Head Golf Professional

The Professional Staff and I love producing a golfing experience that provides you, your family, and your guests, an enjoyment with lasting memories. Events such as last month’s Masters Par 3 Tournament, is a great example of how your clubs’ fellowship and camaraderie is rising to the forefront of the Golf Operation. Eighty players participated in last month’s event, along with a wide range of demographics participating; a Golf Professionals dream!

With the sun rising in the sky, the Outer Banks weather is turning for the good and so is our Couples Golf. Couples Golf has become one of the most popular events to participate at the club for golfing activities. It is not unusual to foresee close to 50 players each Sunday, due to the rapid increase in popularity.

For 2021, the format is focusing on teaming up couples in a Captains Choice event. Captains Choice is when all players tee off, and the team selects the best shot. This format is continued until the ball is holed; for all 9-holes. This is a great way to play in an extremely relaxed atmosphere, plus the post-round festivities that congregate around the fire pit.

The Golf Committee and I highly encourage all players to kindly fill in their divots with the sand provided in the carts, or if you walk, Sand Bottles are provided at the start of both nines. Players who warm up or just practice on the Long-Range Practice Facility, are also asked to fill in their divots with the sand provided. As golfers, proper etiquette is to fill in your divots and fix your ball marks.

We hope to see you around the club soon.

Sincerely,
Aaron Palen, PGA Head Golf Professional

The Professional Staff and I want to invite you to the 2021 Masters Par 3 Tournament on Wednesday, April 7th for a 1pm Shotgun Start. Grab your friends and build your own team for a Captains Choice event. All 18-Holes will be converted to Par 3’s. Guests are encouraged to participate, and a great way to showcase all of the great camaraderie that your club has to offer. This event does not require a handicap, as we will post-flight the field once all of the scores are in.

Personally, I am very excited for Tuesday, April 13th. This is our first LGA event of the season; the LGA Quarterly. The LGA Quarterly is a 9-hole event and is a Captains Choice format, followed by great food and fellowship in the clubhouse. I hope to see all of our ladies out and kick off to the 2021 LGA Season with a large turnout.

We have our Demo Day scheduled for Thursday, April 29 from 12pm until 4pm. Callaway, Cleveland, Srixon, and XXIO will be on the Practice Tee showcasing their 2021 clubs. This is a great opportunity to test out new clubs and compare them with your current clubs. Launch monitors will be used by all of the manufacturers, and your Professional Staff will be on the Practice Tee to help answer any questions you might have on the new equipment.

I hope to see you around the club,
Aaron Palen, PGA Head Golf Professional

All 18 greens will have pins tucked in the hardest corner of each green, with lightening fast greens. Test your patience in a Captain’s Choice format where handicaps are not required. Regardless if your child is brand new to golf, or is looking to play competitive golf, there are programs designed to address all youth demographics. Duck Woods Country Club news

Typically, I would have just returned from attending the annual PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Florida. This year, due to COVID, the event was held virtually. Although seeing the event virtually and not in person was a little different; the show still provided a great learning experience both for the education classes and seeing new products. Later this month, I will be attending the Merchandisers of the Year conference, virtually, and I am really excited to learn from all of my talented colleagues across the country. More importantly, bringing new and exciting products and programs for our members here at Duck Woods Country Club.

I would like to invite you and your favorite partner on Saturday, February 13th for a 9-hole event; Valentine me Stableford. The format is a team Alternate Shot Format using NET Stableford Points. Each team will have a calculated team handicap and score off of their NET Score. Complete details are listed in the Golf Shop.

In just one month, the annual March Madness 4 Corner Tournament (Saturday, March 13) will be held. This tournament has quickly become a flagship event. Grab your friends, build your team (or we will pair you), and play 18-holes with pins tucked in the hardest corner of each green. Enjoy lightning fast greens and see what your team can shoot in a captain’s choice format. No handicap required (guests are welcome) and all teams will be post-flighted (once scores are in, teams will be placed in flights (everyone has a chance to place). Complete event details will be announced in a couple of weeks.

As always, we hope to see you around the club. Sincerely,
Aaron Palen, PGA Head Golf Professional

Duck Woods Country Club news

The Professional Staff and I would like to wish you and your family a Happy New Year.

Although the winter time is our “off-season,” we are planning the upcoming 2021 Golfing Season. Later this month, I will be attending the annual PGA Show that is normally held in Orlando. Due to COVID-19, this year’s event will be held 100% virtually. The PGA Show is one of my favorite weeks of the year; the week is full of classes, meetings with vendors, and sharing programs/events with colleagues.

As more information becomes available during that week, I look forward to bringing as much new product back to our members via the club’s Facebook page.

I look forward to seeing you around the club. Sincerely,
Aaron Palen, PGA Head Golf Professional

The annual Pro’s Holiday party will be a little different this year due to COVID-19. Starting on Wednesday, December 2nd, is the first day of the Holiday Sale and will continue through the end of the calendar year. Specific merchandise has been ordered; a great opportunity to spend those credit book dollars. Complimentary gift wrapping will also be available for your shopping pleasure.

There are many avenues to purchase your equipment, clothing, accessories, and gifts for loved ones both here on the Outer Banks and online. At your Professional Shop, each vendor is carefully selected to provide products to our members and guests that your Professional Staff has endorsed. The Shop is displayed with unique décor that complements the visual appearances of the goods for sale and departmentalized to aid in providing the best shopping experience on the Sand Bar.

On your next trip to the club, stop by your Professional Shop and browse the displays and goods for sale; a few stories and laughs might transpire as well.

We hope to see you soon. Sincerely,
Aaron Palen, PGA Head Golf Professional
