April was a busy month for tennis. USTA is in full swing. On Saturday April 2nd, there was the Racquet Sport Spring Kick Off. There was a good turnout plus great to be able to socialize. It has been awhile since we have been able to get somewhat back to normal. The LTA had their big fund raiser on Friday the 22nd and 23rd. Friday night was the cocktail party with lots of great raffle items. Saturday held the matches with 22 teams. Di Small and Nicole Bouker co-chaired the event. They did a great job along with the hard working committees. Special thanks to the generous sponsors that helped to make this a success.

Now that it is warming up, come out and enjoy some tennis.

Spring is slowly coming. Flowers are blooming and USTA has started. All good signs that the weather is getting warmer.

In March we had our first LTA quarterly meeting. We were happy to welcome a new member NuNu Ugrula and two returning members Daphne Akers and Maura Cliff. Di Small talked to us about Swinging in Spring on April 22nd & 23rd. It is our open event to raise Scholarship money. Janet Colegrove agreed to chair our other fundraiser, Get Pink, which will be held in October. Lynda Burek updated us on the status of the Pickleball courts.

We wish Kevin a speedy recovery from his recent shoulder surgery.

Duck Woods women who are players or fans are welcome to join the LTA. Lee Vermeulen (President), Lynn Watts (Vice President), Diane Rohan (Secretary), or Toni Joyner (Treasurer) will be happy to answer any questions.

Let’s hope March is a better month for tennis and know that spring is close by. One sign of spring is the beginning of USTA. If not playing come out and support our teams. Put March 10th on your calendar. We will be having the first quarterly meeting of 2022. We welcome any lady to join us. Details will be forthcoming. If you are interested in joining, you can contact any LTA board member. Think spring so we can enjoy the sport. See you on the courts.

Even though the weather is not always the best this time of year, we still have some good days to get out and play. Kevin and Whitney work hard to keep the courts open for us so, when the sun is shining dress accordingly and head for the courts. The clinics will also be held, weather permitting.

The annual Valentine’s Social will be at 6 pm at Pine Island on February 10th. All tennis and pickleball players are invited. So, bring some food to share and your favorite beverage and come join the fun. You need to RSVP to the Pro shop.

The LTA will be holding the first quarterly meeting of the year on March 10th, so mark your calendars. Diane Rohan will be sending out an email to the LTA members to let them know the plan for the evening. Let’s hope we are on another downside to the virus. Looking forward to seeing you all there.

Soon will be the sign ups for the people that want to play in the USTA spring leagues. The Pro shop will keep us informed on when and what is going on.

If you are a tennis player or just want to join a fun group of women, you are very welcome to come join. If you have any questions, you can contact me, Lee Vermeulen, at obx.tandem@gmail.com. You can also contact any LTA board member. Vice President is Lynn Watts; Secretary is Diane Rohan, or Treasurer, Toni Joyner. Look forward to seeing you.

The LTA had a busy fall with USTA play, tournaments and ‘Get Pinked’, our fundraiser. On December 9th, we had our last meeting for 2021. We elected Lynn Watts to be Vice President. She joins the other officers: Lee Vermeulen, President, Diane Rohan, Secretary, and Toni Joyner, Treasurer. Other business was Diane Rohan and Linda Burek presenting a $3,293 check to Marie Neilson from the money raised by ‘Get Pinked’. Diane and Lin-da put on a very successful event that was enjoyed by both tennis and pickleball players. Thank you to both of you. ‘Get Pinked’ money stays local and is used to help with cancer detecting and treating.

We also welcomed three new members: Marie Neilson, Jackie Obmann, and Jennifer Zasada. Kevin and Whitney were thanked for all they have done for us this year.

Now that we are in the winter months, things will slow down, and I hope we have some nice weather to get some play in. It is also the time of year that we are planning for the busy Spring. USTA will start up, there will be tournaments, and ‘Swing into Spring’ fundraiser for our Scholarship fund. We are hoping for a more normal year and one better than 2021.

Happy Healthy New Year to all.

Lee Vermeulen

This year has been filled with many challenges for our LTA board. Not only did we have 3 new board members, your current president, me, was unable to learn the process or procedures from the last president, Janet, due to Covid restrictions. As a result, we did not get as much on the schedule this year as we wished. In spite of that, we welcomed so many new members to our organization. Welcome all of you and I hope to get to play with each of you over the coming year.

The LTA board will be meeting soon to set up the 2021/2022 Calendar. Please reach out to us. We would love to hear your ideas for events or fun socials for next year.

It is also the time to elect a new vice-president. Lee Vermeulen will be reaching out for volunteers to form a Nominating Committee. If you are interested in being on this committee, please contact Lee at obxtandem@gmail.com.

Thank you all for your support this year. We hope to see you at our final meeting/banquet in December. More information about that will be forthcoming.

Jean Spencer, President DWLTA

May has been a busy month for tennis. The USTA teams finished their spring session. On May 19th, LTA awarded two scholarships to two deserving Manteo High School students in the amount of $1,200 each. We wish them well on pursuing their college career. Also on May 22nd, we held our scholarship fundraiser, ‘Swing into Spring’. This was an all day affair of 23 teams made up of members and guests. Besides play, there was raffles with prizes.

June 10th is our quarterly social and meeting. Starts with fun play followed by meeting, light snack, and refreshments. We will be welcoming our new members Jackie Obmann, Maureen Montgomery, and Jennifer Schwartzenberg. Any Duck Woods tennis player is very welcome to join us!

After surviving a difficult year of Covid-19 the tennis program at DWCC continues to flourish. With restrictions being lifted and vaccines being administered we have seen more players returning to the courts.

The DWLTA had their first Social and Quarterly Meeting in March. Many members attended, playing tennis first and then enjoying light snacks and refreshments at the meeting after. We welcomed our new members, Lynn Watts, Robin Hearne, Marcie Reese and Becky Voslow. We are happy to have you join us.

We were finally able to have our first tennis social since Covid-19 cancelled so many the past year. The Spring Kick-off was held April 3rd. It was great to reconnect with some of our members while playing Tennis and Pickleball. Everyone had a great time playing and socializing. We look forward to more events like this as the year progresses.

The LTA would like to extend our heartfelt sympathy to the Colegrove family. John Colegrove passed away unexpectedly a few months ago. Janet is an avid tennis player and member of the LTA. Both she and John supported the tennis community for many years. The LTA paid tribute to John at a small memorial service on April 6th. We picked out a Hashino cherry tree which, along with a beautiful memorial plaque is planted beside the upper parking lot. The tree can be seen from the Colegrove home. If you stand by the tree you can see the golf course and tennis courts. John will be dearly missed but his memory will live on.

The LTA board would like to extend an invitation to all Duck Woods tennis players to join the LTA. The LTA board welcomes any questions you may have about our organization by contacting any one of us.

Have a great Spring and enjoy this fabulous weather. See you on the courts.

As 2020 wraps up I can’t help but reflect on the past year, particularly the past several Covid-driven months. During times like these the support and involvement of teammates are more important than ever. As my tenure as President of the Duck Woods Ladies Tennis Association (LTA) comes to an end I’d be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge and appreciate the support of my teammates aka fellow officers.

Secretary Lynne Alterman and Treasurer Camille Miller are both finishing up two! consecutive terms, each having served a total of four years. Their guidance, work and dedication over the years have been invaluable in ensuring the continued success of our organization. Vice-President Jean Spencer has been a great partner who, among various and sundry tasks, led our 2020 scholarship selection process via Zoom committee meetings.

In accordance with our by-laws, Jean will slide into the LTA presidency in January and is fortunate to have three outstanding teammates: Vice-President Lee Vermeulen, Secretary Diane Rohan and Treasurer Toni Joyner. It’s a great team that will bring new energy and enthusiasm as we head into a new year.

Finally, I’d like to thank all LTA members for their ongoing sup- port of our association, the Duck Woods tennis program and the Club. Along with WADWCC and LGA, the women of the LTA continue to provide the Club with unmatched energy and unwavering support. As 2020 comes to an end I send hearty congratulations and deep-felt gratitude to all the women of Duck Woods for all that they’ve done and continue to do for our Club.

Wishing a wonderful and healthy holiday season to all,
Janet C.
