“The Split Step”


Make it a point to split step every time your opponent hits the ball. This will have you in better rhythm with the ball and you will always be able to turn in the correct direction based on the direction your opponent’s racquet face is pointing at their contact point. Try this out this month and let me know how it works for you!

“Tennis Grip Changes”


The non-dominant hand is the hand responsible for changing grips in between shots. While in the ready position, relax your dominant hand and use your non-dominant hand to rotate the racquet to achieve the correct grip for the shot you are performing based on the incoming ball.

BIG NEWS IN THE PICKLEBALL WORLD:

The United States Pickleball Association instituted a rule change on a trial basis for 2021 wherein there are no lets. If a server hits the net on their serve and the ball lands past the kitchen line and in the correct box, the ball is now in play.

“The Continental Grip”


The continental grip is the most versatile grip in tennis. Ensure that you’re gripping the racquet with the continent grip by checking that your thumb and index finger make a check mark on the top center bevel with the crease of where these two fingers meet to the left of center of the bevel. The continental grip works great for slice, two handed backhands, volleys, serves, and overheads. Come on out and work on hitting shots with the continental grip this month and let me know how it works for you!

BIG NEWS IN THE PICKLEBALL WORLD:

The United States Pickleball instituted a new rule allowing the paddle to be above the waist and allowing the head of the paddle to be above the wrist when making contact on the serve. This increases the ability to add topspin to the serve which in turn allows for a more powerful serve. The caveat is that the ball must bounce first. To create the highest bounce possible, the ball can be dropped from as high as you can reach up, but cannot be tossed in an upward manner to increase the height of the bounce. Try this out and let me know how it works for you!

“Moving Early to the Ball”


The earlier you move to the ball, the greater your chances of making an optimal tennis shot will be. “Reading Pickleball Spins”


As a Pickleball is traveling towards you, pay close attention to the direction in which the holes on the ball are rotating. If the holes are rotating forwards, the ball will jump with an upward and forward trajectory towards you. If the holes are rotating backwards, the ball will either stall upon its bounce or skip like a flat rock on water with a low trajectory towards you. Try this out next time you play pickleball and you will have a much better time anticipating whether you should move for- ward or backward to contact the ball at the appropriate height and hit a great groundstroke.
