Fall has finally come to the Outer Banks! With cooler weather and a few less visitors, we can all enjoy these beach towns that we call home! Our first General Membership Meeting was held on October 6th via Zoom. We enjoyed a tour of the KDH Cooperative Gallery and Studios with Julie Moye, who opened the Co-op in 2001. The variety of art pieces for sale in the gallery is amazing! We also recognized our three new Honorary Members for this year. Many thanks to Sue Butler, Kathy Horne, and Martha Furioni who have given so much time and talent to WADWCC and our surrounding community. At our next general meeting, the Coastal Federation will present “Oyster Shellabration”, sharing the role of oysters in North Carolina’s coastal ecology and economy. Please set aside time at 11:00 on Wednesday, November 3rd to “Shellabrate” with us! We are busy planning our Preholiday Event for November 5th at the Banquet Room entrance to the Club from 1:00-3:00 pm. Members will have an opportunity to pick up their copy of the WADWCC Member Directory that has returned to the printed booklet form for 2021-22. At the same time, members can drop off their Thanksgiving Food Bags for the Beach Food Pantry, sign up to supply gifts for a local family or child through our Christmas Families program, and donate to our charities. Come out on November 5th to help our community during the holiday season and to visit with friends!

Membership – Michele Maslak
The Membership Directories will be distributed at the WADWCC Pre-Holiday Event on November 5th between 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at the banquet room entrance of DWCC. If you cannot attend, please arrange for another member to pick up yours for you. New members are always welcome! Please reach out to me by phone (913-226-2527) or by email michelemaslak@gmail.com with any questions regarding membership.

Welcome Wagon – Jann Koch
In September we welcomed eight new members: Bob and Deeley Middleton, Catherine and Adam Baldwin, Katie and Josh Foster, and Joseph and Shauna Schatz. Also, if you have noticed more members around the club, it may be because the club welcomed back 38 members over the summer! If you see someone you don’t know, please introduce yourself and say, “Welcome.”

Food For Thought – Judi Flakowicz
Instead of an in person fundraiser this fall, we have sent out a mailing asking for donations for Food for Thought. Please be on the lookout for it. WADWCC is always a strong supporter of this important organization, both monetarily and by volunteering your time, and we thank you so much!

Marathon Bridge Club – Judy Copeman
Marathon Bridge has begun and will run through August. There is still time to add a team, so find a partner and join the fun! All skill levels welcome. Contact Judy Copeman at jcopeman@verizon.net.

Ways and Means – Judy Copeman
For those members who would like to support WADWCC Charities while we are meeting virtually, Ways and Means Committee has placed an envelope on the bulletin board in the ladies locker room. If you would like to leave a gift for Christmas Families or Scholarship please write check to WADWCC and note on the memo line which charity it is for. Checks may be made out directly to Beach Food Pantry or Food For Thought. Throughout the month of November, WADWCC will be holding a raffle. One lucky winner will receive $100 cash. Chances are $1/per ticket. Winner will be announced at our December 1st meeting.

Dog Walking Club – Diane Rohan along with Augie & Pippa
The dog walking club was small, but mighty on Friday October 8. The Club’s lead, Diane Rohan, and dogs Pippa and Augie, met Barbara Williams with dog Remy at the East Dogwood Beach access. The dogs loved romping in the sunshine. They met a Westie named Eden and a mixed breed named Bennett, and all got along well. Lots of running, wrestling, spinning, and an occasional dip in the water rounded out the day. Contact Diane Rohan at dianerohan3@gmail.com if you would like to join the group.

Program – JoAnn Small & Ginger Webster
At our October meeting, we enjoyed a virtual tour of the KDH Cooperative Gallery led by multi-media artist Julie Moye, who opened the gallery in 2001. Members were treated to a dazzling visual display of oils, watercolors, jewelry, fabric art, ironworks and more and had the added pleasure of chatting with Julie after the tour. Upcoming November 3rd program: Oyster “Shellebration”

Whether you enjoy eating oysters or not, they play an important role in NC’s coastal ecology and economy. Erin Fleckenstein, manager of the NC Coastal Federation’s Wanchese office, will be joining us by zoom to provide information on initiatives to make NC the Napa Valley of Oysters. She will discuss efforts that are underway to grow oyster farming to a $100 million industry while ensuring a continued balanced use of our coastal sounds and habitats. You’ll also learn how you can visit an oyster farm.

Literary Duck Book and Movie Club – Ellen Kruse
Literary Ducks Book and Movie group is off to a great start with two interesting discussions under our belts. Our next meeting will be Monday November 15 at 10:30. We will discus WEST WITH GIRAFFES by Lynda Rutledge. Our facilitator will be Linda Etheridge. Lunch to follow. Members will get a reminder email in early November. Questions or want to join our group? Contact Ellen Kruse erileyk@aol.com or 301-633-4760.

Food Pantry – Betty Bradley
Unfortunately, The 2021 Holiday Chef’s Challenge that was scheduled for Saturday, November 13th, has been cancelled. With a community-wide survey, it was clear that attendance would be an issue due to the concerns around COVID. Hopefully, it will be rescheduled in November 2022. The Food Pantry Thanksgiving Bags and gift cards may be dropped off at the WADWCC PRE HOLIDAY EVENT on Wednesday, November 5 2021 1-3 PM. A list of all items will be emailed and also available in the ladies locker room. The list will also be on the WADWCC Facebook page. Volunteers are needed to help collect the bags and help load them to be delivered. Contact me at bgbradley5@gmail.com if you are interested. Your help is greatly appreciated.

The October/November birthday gathering will at the club Thursday, November 11th from 4 to 6. It is being organized and hosted by Judi Smith, Donna Countryman, and Deanna McDole. Those invited will be sent an email with all the details.
